Abstract
The competency “Solves quantity problems” is essential for strengthening students’ critical thinking, creativity, and autonomy, preparing them to face everyday challenges. However, various evaluations reveal that primary school students encounter significant difficulties, particularly when translating real-life situations into mathematical expressions, applying calculation strategies, and justifying their answers. To address this issue, the present study analyzed the effectiveness of the Open Algorithm Based on Numbers (ABN) method on the achievement level of this competency among third-grade students from a public educational institution. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design was used, including the application of pretest and posttest instruments. The study evaluated dimensions such as translating quantities, communicating numerical understanding, using estimation and calculation strategies, and arguing about numerical relationships and operations. The relevance of this research lies in providing evidence of the impact of the ABN method, aligned with active and meaningful learning approaches promoted by the National Basic Education Curriculum. The results showed a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.003944; p < 0.01), leading to the conclusion that implementing the ABN method had a positive effect on the students’ achievement level in the evaluated competency.
